This paper deals with the implementation of local elections in the Republic of Croatia. It has been made a review of the historical territorial division of the territory of the Republic of Croatia, Further is discussed the current arrangement of units and bodies of local and regional self-government units. Municipalities and cities, as well as the recently introduced notion of large cities as units of local self-government, are treated according to the powers and bodies of executive and representative bodies. Counties, as units of regional self-government with a wider scope, are elaborated through the notion of county assembly and prefects. Also, a special approach to local elections is applied to members of national minorities in the Republic of Croatia who must be represented in the representative bodies of local and regional self-government units. Special emphasis was placed on the bodies conducting the elections (election commissions), the election campaign and the type and manner of collecting material funds. As with all elections, it is necessary to adhere to certain electoral principles and statutory rules regarding actively and passively legitimized persons who may participate in the elections. The conduct of elections must be held in a legitimate manner provided by law, and this is reflected in the supervision of the constitutionality and legality of the candidacy itself and the conduct of local elections.
