Trademark as a special form of industrial property is a part of the legal system of the Republic of Croatia. A trademark is protected symbol of a natural or legal person that has an exclusive right to place products bearing a trademark or to use a trademark in provision of services on the market. With the development of trade, trademarks become part of our everyday life. A trademark can appear in different forms consisting of words, symbols, design, colors or sounds. The main purpose of a trademark is to distinguish products or services off one manufacturer to those of another. Legal protection is regulated by the provisions of Trademark Act, Trademark Regulations and by international agreements. A trademark is acquired by registration whose examination is carried out by the competent authority The State Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Croatia. Besides being protected on a national level, it can be protected on regional (European Union trade mark) or even at international level (The Madrid System). This thesis focuses on the analysis of trademarks, its origin, validity and termination, trademark assignment, civil and criminal protection, as well as the registration procedure at the national, regional and international level.
